Many electrical utilities need to ensure the electrical load is less than what can be generated in order to exercise some form of load control.
Certain applications are identified as “deferrable” as they can run after the peak, later in the day. Applications vary by region, but common loads include residential electric hot-water heaters, air conditioners, pool pumps, crop-irrigation pumps, etc.
Practicing load control requires communicating controllers that run programs to limit the duty cycle of the equipment.
By means of a loadshed controller, the optimum control point is determined based on the metering inputs, time remaining in the block interval and the user-programmed target. The optimum control point is used to shed or restore loads via the controller’s relay outputs.
